Portland Auto Dealer: Hyundai Brings the 2013 Veloster Turbo to the Detroit Auto Show
Hyundai’s three-door Veloster gained a lot of well-deserved attention when it debuted at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show. Hyundai is back in Michigan this year for the 2012 event with a Turbo version of its sporty little coupe. MotorTrend called the Veloster Turbo “showy” and “rambunctious,” and says it “looks good on paper.” With the cosmetic enhancements, refinements, and upgrades—new grille styles, new headlamp shapes, a dual round-tip center exhaust setup, and 18-inch alloy wheels, we think it’ll look good on the road, too.
With increased horsepower, manual transmission standard, a seven-inch touchscreen “infotainment” center, heated front seats, and a push-button starter, the Veloster Turbo is an affordable luxury coupe. Pandora Internet radio or mobile devices can stream music wirelessly through the car’s speaker system. Safety hasn’t been compromised in favor of looks or comfort, either. Bluetooth audio streaming and a hands-free phone system keep hands on the wheel and attention on the road. Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics system provides voice-to-text messaging, Automatic Crash Notification, and SOS Emergency Assistance.

Didn’t get to New York City in time to play the Hyundai Race interactive game on the billboard in Times Square? In addition to being able to play the game for free online, Hyundai has uploaded official gameplay video to its YouTube page. After downloading a free app to their smartphones—which were then used as controllers—players in Times Square took an animated Hyundai Veloster for a spin around a virtual raceway. High scorers saw their accomplishments displayed for everyone to see.

The editors at MotorTrend magazine took the Veloster out for a spin on the streets of Portland and were summarily impressed. “Inside, the Veloster is as expressive as the exterior,” they wrote, including an “LG-sourced 7-inch touchscreen with some of the best graphic design elements we’ve laid our eyes on recently.” That touch screen is standard in every Veloster and includes access to Pandora internet radio and talk-to-text capability to keep your hands on the wheel while communicating on-the-go.

Former BMW Transportation Design Director Joins Hyundai Christopher Chapman, who started working for BMW in 1994 and has been the company’s Transportation Design director since 2008, has been hired by Hyundai. Chapman joins the South Korean automaker as chief designer at the company’s Design Center in Irvine, California.
Hyundai Launches Interactive Billboard in Times Square Download the Hyundai Race controller app from iTunes, use Hyundai’s free wifi network in Times Square, and race a virtual Veloster against other players on a billboard. Hyundai says the game will remain up for the rest of 2011, and is the first of many interactive experiences planned in the New York landmark.
Hyundai May Announce Job Openings at its Ann Arbor Technical Center The Superior Township technical center, located just outside Ann Arbor, Michigan, opened in 2005 and currently employs 150 designers and engineers. While the center’s website lists 20 job openings, the South Korean automaker is withholding comment until a Michigan Economic Development Corp. news conference on January 10.

Portland Car Dealer: Essential Items to Keep in Your Emergency Car Kit
Between trips to see friends and family and excursions to the mountains in addition to our daily commutes, it’s important that we keep our cars stocked with essential equipment and supplies for our winter travels. This may seem like a long list, but most of it will fit in a banker’s box in the trunk and, as your mother always said, “better safe than sorry.”
1. Fluids for your car – a quart each of oil, windshield wiper fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, distilled water, and coolant. A can of fix-a-flat foam. Some sort of de-icer (low-grade, bottom-shelf, undrinkably cheap vodka works just as well as chemical de-icers, but not everyone wants to have alcohol in their trunk – so that’s up to you).
2. Blankets or sleeping bags, toilet paper, drinking water, and high-protein snacks like granola bars or trail mix, in case you get stuck by the side of the road or your heater stops working.
3. Spare tire (make sure it’s inflated!), lug wrench, and a jack. AAA membership or roadside assistance information from your insurance company, if you have it. Practice changing a tire before you leave home. If you don’t know how to change a flat, make sure you have roadside assistance before a blowout on I-5 happens.
4. Chains to fit your tires – practice putting them on and taking them off before you leave home.
5. Jumper cables and a cheat sheet (the last thing you want is to start a fire). VIA Magazine has a great guide for this. Speaking of fires: keep a small fire extinguisher in that kit, too.
6. Replacement wipers for the front and back windows.
7. Tarp, duct tape, and plastic sheeting – in case you have to change a flat tire or put chains on, the tarp will protect your clothes from any dirt, grime, rocks, snow, etc. on the ground. Plastic sheeting and duct tape will cover a broken window in a pinch until you can get it replaced.
8. A cell phone charger adapter that plugs into your vehicle’s lighter port. You can’t call for help or tell people you’ll be late if your phone battery is dead!
